Date Network Outage Details Resolution

January 23, 2012

04:50pm: Vaca North tower: Water damage to cable in East-facing access point (transmitter). Cable will be repaired. ETA for service start is noon.

January 22-23, 2012

10:08pm: Berryessa Peak tower: Power issue at Berryessa Peak tower in Yolo County. Equipment being replaced. ETA for service startup is 10am.

Berryessa Peak service restored at 8:15am

December 16, 2011

8:58pm: Service interruption for customers connected to the Vaca North and Berryessa Peak transmitters due to a hardware issue at the main Vaca Hills backhaul supplying Vaca North (which in-turn supplies Berryessa Peak). No other sites/transmitters were affected. Traffic flow was just enough to NOT trigger any network monitoring alerts (throughput of 0.01-0.02 Mbps), but wasn't sufficient to pass normal network traffic (10-20 Mbps). No explanation for this issue at the moment, but will research the equipment manufacturer's support website.

September 14, 2011

Monitoring data also shows an abnormal number of customer computers (router IPs) broadcasting virus/spyware-type packets. Customers are being contacted when identified about their computer infections. These conditions are causing a slowness on the network.

September 1-14, 2011

We continue to investigate a network loop. We have also identified and replaced a bad switch at Vaca North tower.

Loop found and closed at 12:10pm on Sept. 14

September 1, 2011

*6:00pm, a network loop between the Vaca North and Berryessa Peak towers caused a network outage for customers connected to the Vaca North and Berryesa Peak towers. The cause of the loop has not been identified.

Service restored at 8:10pm

September 1, 2011

*8:30am, a PG&E power surge burned-out the battery backup unit at the Berryessa Peak tower in Yolo County. The surge also burned-out the remote power swicth which controls power to all network devices. The battery backup unit was replaced and all equipment reprogrammed. No other towers were affected.

Service restored at 3:30pm

August 16, 2011

*11:00am, a GPS timing cable and GPS antenna were damaged at the Vaca Hills tower, causing intermittent service outages for customers connected through that tower. The GPS antenna and cable is being replaced. All other towers are operating normally.

Service restored at 3:10pm

August 1-3, 2011

A software upgrade on the web hosting server went wrong. The Solano and Yolo Wireless website as well as the webmail access was down for ~2 days as technicians in Denver, CO worked to resolve the software upgrade issues. POP email and Internet access was not affected.

Website and webmail access restored at 10am

June 13, 2011

Radio interference at the slave backhaul unit in Vacaville caused the unit to automatically reboot twice to try to clear the RF noise and find a cleaner channel. Since the backhaul is the main Internet feed between Sacramento and Vacaville, services were interrupted during this time.

Service outage from 7:50 - 8:22 pm

May 6, 2011

Cable accidentally disconnected. While working on the tower, a cable was accidentally pulled from the backhaul. Problem was identified and corrected.

Service outage from 5:00 - 5:25 pm

Service outage from 10:00 - 10:15 am

April 4, 2011

#Vaca South Tower. A vehicle accident near/on Pleasants Valley Road caused a PG&E power outage atop the Blue Ridge Mountain. The Vaca North battery backup automatically came online, but the Vaca South propane generator failed. A battery backup has been ordered for Vaca South tower to replace the gas generator.

Service outage from 1:10pm to 7pm

March 6-7, 2011

Solar Hills Relay. The transmitter failed at 6:54pm on the 6th. The unit was replaced service restored at 11:10am on the 7th. This outage affected all customers connected to the Solar Hills relay only.

Service outage from 2:10pm to 4:50pm

February 23, 2011

Berryessa Peak tower. A power interruption caused a service disruption for customers connected to the Berryessa Peak tower. The propane backup generator had apparently been running non-stop since last week (control switch failed) and drained the propane tank (a $3000 mistake). The tower owner was able to restore power at 4:50pm.

Service outage from 2:10pm to 4:50pm

February 17, 2011

Several outages reported. Snow on the trees atop Mt. Vaca is causing partial obstruction of the backhaul, and therefore affecting speed for customers connected through that transmitter. The Lagoon Valley West-facing transmitter is down and being repaired. A power main has been accidentally cut at the Hartley relay and power will be off for 2-3 days. A backup generator will provide Internet for 6 hours per day during this time.

January 10-28, 2011

We have been investigating an intermittent service outage. The network symtom manifests as a loss of Internet service for brief periods of time daily. Several possible causes have been identified and corrected. The investigation is ongoing. See news article title Tropospheric Ducting for explanation.

January 2, 2011

*2:30am. The signal of the East-facing transmitter at Berryessa Peak tower in Yolo County degraded significantly overnight. Despite the near blizzard conditions, the tower was climbed and a bad cable was replaced. It appears a bird had eaten into the cable, and then the ice must have expanded and ruptured it the rest of the way.

Service restored at 3:30pm

December 10, 2010

*11:33am. The backhaul (bandwidth supply) at the main tower in Vacaville went down, disrupting service until it was rebooted.

September 27, 2010

*11:45am. The backhaul (carries the Internet signal) between the Vaca South tower (atop Mt. Vaca) and the Vaca Hills tower (above Lagoon Valley) was out of alignment. A company was hired by the tower association to spray rust-preventative paint at most towers. We suspect someone "inadvertently" hit the backhaul at Mt. Vaca with a ladder and moved it out of alignment. This resulted in slow Internet connection for customers connected through the Vaca South tower until the backhaul was realigned.

Posted: November 24, 2008
The two megabit ethernet cards in the Cisco router (e.g. a BIG version of the router you have for your home Internet) have reached the maximum of their speed capabilities, causing the network to suffer. It order to keep services up, we have be forced to reduce overall download speeds on the network from 30 Mbps to 15 Mbps. Today we ordered two new gigabit ethernet cards and will replace the current cards as soon as the parts arrive. In the interim, customers may notice slower downloads.
